I have been following the debate on what is appropriate to put on the new euro coins to give it a Maltese connection.

It is now known that the Baptism of Christ was chosen because it gained the highest vote, a mere 3,498 votes, out of a very small poll.

I'm of the opinion that if Malta wants the new euro coins to stand out from the rest of the euro coins, there is only one simple way, that is, to put on the coins the "Maltese Cross" on one side and Malta on the other side. The cross is an icon to Malta like the kangaroo is to Australia.

Religion must not be brought into this because religion and money don't mix. I'm as much a Christian as the next person, but I don't believe that some statue kept in some dark corner of a church should be put on coins representing a sovereign state.

The number of people in Malta that knew and have seen this statue would be very small, and for the rest of Europe and those outside Europe would be even smaller.

To those foreigners who want to have a cheap shot at us who chose to live in some other country and wish to take part in expressing an opinion about our country of birth, I say grow up and mind your own business.
