The list of consortia interested in the port merchandise tender has been cut back to five after one of the groups pulled out of the process.

PD Ports plc, which had initially showed interest in the contract, informed the Malta Maritime Authority that it was no longer interested in the tendering process, the government said yesterday.

The other five consortia are: Hili Company Ltd - a consortium with the General Workers' Union and Port Workers' Investments Plc; Kuwait & Gulf Link Stevedoring Company Ltd - a port operator based in Kuwait; La Valletta Terminal Co Ltd - represented by Farrugia, Gatt & Falzon, which includes BLG Consult of Germany, Salv. Bezzina and Sons Ltd, Salvu Meli and Sons Ltd and Joseph Paris; Malta Ports Terminals - a consortium with port workers, foremen, ship agents, and Liverpool-based Portia Management Services as a strategic partner; and FiveTF Shipping Agencies - a consortium which includes the Tumas Group and Portek Ports of Singapore.

The consortia are expected to submit their offers in the coming weeks and the evaluation will take place at once.
