Labour Party leader Alfred Sant yesterday got acquainted with what it takes to run an animal sanctuary when he visited the Island Sanctuary, in Delimara (above).

He heard Claire Gafà, one of the workers at the sanctuary, complain about the lack of attention similar NGOs got from the authorities.

The fact that a personality such as Dr Sant, who occupied such a high position in the country, showed interest in animal welfare was a source of encouragement because this could mean future support, she said.

Dr Sant said it was evident that those running the sanctuary were experiencing a severe lack of resources. The MLP admired the work done by volunteers and said he believed in a commitment by the authorities to give value and support to such activity.

The MLP said that recently Dr Sant had announced that a future Labour government would set up a sanctuary for the care of domestic animals six months after it is elected to office.
