PRESIDENT Eddie Fenech Adami yesterday stressed the importance of overcoming the stigma of epilepsy at the third National Conference on Epilepsy organised by the Caritas Malta Epilepsy Association.
The condition affects 2,900 people in Malta, athough it is not always apparent.
The association's chairman, Mario Dimech, explained how 10 years ago Maltese with epilepsy felt the need to set up a support group for them to be able to share their problems with other people living with the same condition.
It now helps people with epilepsy and their families, as well as educating the public about the condition.
The organisation's main aim is to help sufferers lead a better quality of life, increase awareness about epilepsy so that people may be better informed and the associated stigma eventually eradicated.
The conference included contributions from distinguished foreign speakers as well as Caritas director Mgr Victor Grech.
