Multiplus is one of nine new telecasters out of 215 countries around the world that will broadcast the NBA All-Star Weekend for the first time.

The event brings together the top NBA players and performers for a weekend of competition, community service and world-class entertainment. Among the many events that reach more than 3.1 billion people are the Rookie Challenge; All-Star Saturday and the 55th NBA All-Star Game. Multiplus will be transmitting these three major games of the 2006 NBA All-Star Weekend exclusively on its Sports+ package (channel 804).

Rookie Challenge

Early Saturday morning an important game - Rookie Challenge - will be transmitted live at 3.05 a.m. The game will be repeated on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.

The participants in the Rookie Challenge were selected by the NBA's assistant coaches, with each team submitting one ballot. The head coaches for the Rookie and Sophomore teams will be the lead assistants from the 2006 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs.

2005 Night Champions defend crowns

All-Star Saturday will also be transmitted live early on Sunday morning at 2.30 and repeated at 8.30 p.m. later in the day.

This year's star-studded NBA All-Star Saturday Night, presented by AOL, will feature all of last year's champions defending their crowns. Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns (PlayStation Skills Challenge), Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks (Sprite Rising Stars Slam Dunk), Quentin Richardson of the New York Knicks (Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout) and Team Phoenix (RadioShack Shooting Stars) will each look to repeat last year's achievement. This is only the fifth time in NBA All-Star history that all of the prior year's winners are defending their titles.

2006 NBA All Star Game

The 55th NBA All-Star Game will be transmitted live on Monday morning at 2.25 and repeated the following Thursday at 8.30 p.m.

For the second consecutive year, the Rockets' 7 foot 6 inch centre Yao Ming led all vote-getters in the NBA All-Star Balloting programme that determines the starters for the 2006 NBA All-Star Game.

Yao and teammate Tracy McGrady will start in front of a hometown crowd at the Toyota Centre today. Miami's Shaquille O'Neal was selected for his 13th straight All-Star Game, second only to Jerry West (14) and Karl Malone (14). Four Pistons highlight the list of reserves.
