Sting, one of rock music's foremost icons, will give a concert in Malta on June 6 in what promises to be one of the island's rock extravaganzas.

The former Police frontman will be performing at the Luxol grounds as part of his Broken Music tour, after his management reached agreement with NnG Promotions.

Along with Elton John, he is arguably the biggest music name ever imported into Malta.

After disbanding the Police at the peak of their popularity in 1984, Sting quickly established himself as a solo artiste, pushing the boundaries of pop music. He incorporated heavy elements of jazz, classical and world beat into his music, writing lyrics that were literate and self-consciously meaningful.

Songs like Fragile, Shape of My Heart, Desert Rose and Englishman in New York, not to mention the Police classics, have entrenched themselves as timeless masterpieces, to the extent that several of his songs are now covered by up and coming artistes.

Despite mixed reviews to his more recent albums, his live performances have always won the plaudits. Sting has been the target of NnG Promotions for the past two years, partner Nigel Camilleri admitted. "We thought we clinched a deal last year but Sting postponed his tour. Luckily this year we have secured the deal," Mr Camilleri said.

The Broken Music tour is expected to feature several of Sting's greatest hits, including many Police songs. "For a large scale concert to work in Malta you have to entice an artiste whose popularity transcends generations. Sting is one of a handful of artists who appeals to both young and old - and our surveys have shown that Sting is the biggest one of them all."

Tickets, ranging in price from Lm15 to Lm50, will go on sale in the coming days.
