The item entitled First State Hospital Mother Stores Umbilical Cord Blood, which appeared yesterday, was sub-titled Highly Controversial. It must be pointed out that the sub-title was not referring to the service launched by Smart Cells (Malta) but to embryonic stem cell research, as explained in the item itself.
Smart Cells (Malta) explains that stem cells from umbilical cord blood are absolutely not controversial. In umbilical cord blood collection, the stem cells are collected after the baby is born and are taken from the umbilical cord and placenta, which is otherwise thrown away as hospital waste, it says.
Any inconvenience is regretted.
