I would like to ask why is it that when a Gozitan person is arraigned or is in the headlines, the news is always: "Gozitan man arraigned..." or "Gozitan woman in traffic accident..." Is the press taking advantage of our Gozitan identity to sensationalise the news?
The word Gozitan stands out and is open to interpretation and possible stereotyping.
I would rather that the journalists writing the story treat the piece of news as if the person is Maltese, making reference to his/her home town/village. In fact, rarely do I observe news headlines involving Maltese people (non-Gozitans) referring to where the person is from. Rather, this information is contained elsewhere.
I do feel that Gozitans deserve the same treatment as Maltese in press coverage. The press should refrain from discriminating against us by misusing the fact that we are from Gozo.
