Reference is made to the letter entitled "Tunnel lighting" (The Sunday Times, February 5).

It has been pointed out by your readers that lighting in tunnels is not up to scratch and that motorists experience visibility problems when entering a tunnel, especially on a sunny day.

Your readers are reminded that vehicle headlights are required when commuting through tunnels, irrespective of whether the tunnels are properly illuminated or not. This notwithstanding, the Malta Transport Authority will shortly be issuing a tender for tunnel maintenance and illumination.

Contrary to what many motorists believe, the idea of installing glass markers (cat's eyes) in tunnels is not to increase luminance within the tunnel but to improve delineation of the carriageway.
