Viviane Reding, the EU Commissioner responsible for information society and media, has promised to monitor media pluralism in Malta.

Alternattiva Demokratika's spokesman on EU Affairs, Arnold Cassola, said the promise came in response to a parliamentary question on the media situation in Malta submitted by MEP Lilli Gruber.

Ms Reding confirmed that the Commission was aware of the situation in Malta and it agreed on the need for pluralism in the sector.

She said the Commission intended to increase its surveillance of the media through the publication of a working paper on media pluralism, which is scheduled for publication in the next few months.

Prof. Cassola said that thanks to Ms Gruber, hopefully the absurd situation particularly in television broadcasting in Malta would not persist much longer.
