A 60-year-old man charged with importing cocaine and cannabis into Malta was yesterday granted bail against a personal guarantee of Lm10,000 and on condition he does not leave his home.

John Grima, a retired man of Hamrun, is pleading not guilty to importing almost a kilogramme of cocaine and 19 grammes of cannabis on January 24. The drugs were allegedly found in two large candles in a suitcase he was carrying before he was intercepted by Customs and police officers at the airport.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman, presiding over the case, did not impose a deposit as part of Mr Grima's bail conditions because his assets had been frozen in a previous court sitting.

Police Inspector Norbert Ciappara is prosecuting. Lawyers Anglu Farrugia and Edward Gatt are defence counsel.
