Let us consider the facts: Air Malta flight no.138N departed Malta International Airport bound for Manchester on February 7 on time. A British resident of Malta was one of the passengers on that flight. This passenger dutifully checked in two hours prior to flight departure as instructed by Air Malta. The passenger was able to retrieve the luggage within 15 minutes of landing at Manchester.

Upon unpacking, the passenger discovered that items had been removed from the luggage even though the lock did not appear to have been tampered with. Does the airport have CCTV cameras in operation within the luggage sorting area? We only have this passenger's story; it is likely that other passengers on the same flight had items pilfered from their luggage as well. This is not the first time complaints of this nature have appeared in The Times.

What sort of message does this send to passengers? Who is accountable after all?
