Wally Vella Zarb seemed annoyed that a Maltese living abroad like me dared criticise the Maltese translation of the term money laundering, hasil tal-flus, which I guess is now part of the Maltese lexicon. He claims other nations translated the same term literally too.
I would still prefer a word like reklemati. After all laundering money involves transferring ill-gotten earnings into legitimate accounts, usually into offshore accounts. Whereas to me hasil tal-flus sounds more like what one can do in countries like New Zealand where the currency bills are made from polymers that can stand washing.
I guess since Mr Vella Zarb likes this term, he probably loves flus mahmugin as the translation of dirty money, which I think is an abomination.
