Australia have announced their largest ever track and field team for next month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

The host-nation will field 107 athletes for the Games, which run from March 15-26, 21 more than the previous largest team that represented Australia at the Auckland Commonwealth Games in 1990.

Craig Mottram and Jana Pittman are Australia's best-known athletes in the team.

Mottram finished third in the 5,000 metres at last year's world championships.

He will compete in the same event and the 1,500m in Melbourne.

Pittman won the 400m hurdles at the 2003 world championships in Paris and is the reigning champion in the same event at the Commonwealth Games.

Sonia O'Sullivan, Ireland's former 5,000m world champion, was also included in the squad less than a fortnight after gaining Australian citizenship.

In addition to the 107 able-bodied athletes, there will also be 16 elite athletes with a disability in the squad.
