I was recently stopped by a police officer as I was driving out of the Kirkop tunnel for not having my car lights on in the tunnel. I had honestly forgotten to switch them on.

The police officer was polite about it, but would it not have been far better had he been stationed at the tunnel's entrance so that he could indicate to me or any other driver to switch the lights on before entering the tunnel, rather than waiting at the end of the tunnel like a trapper to nab any forgetful soul who comes along? Wardens also have a habit of doing this.

If the tunnel lighting were up to scratch, then we would not need to switch our lights on.

Incidentally, on entering the Tal-Qroqq tunnel from Gzira at about 2 p.m. on a sunny day, you cannot see a thing for the first 50 metres or so, whether you have your car lights on or not.

'Cat's eyes' don't light up the tunnel. I think it's about time someone got their finger out and did something about the lighting in our tunnels. How about spending some of the EU funding on it?
