Access to Il-Munxar was denied in early December. On that particular day the entry passage was blocked and two police officers at the gate refused people entry.

On that same Sunday, possibly by coincidence, a walk organised by an environmental organisation was not granted access to the area. By noon the police officers had left. When confronted, the owner insisted he had permission to close the access because the area is private property.

No-one will contest that the area is private property but access to the shore and the sandy beaches can never be denied. It seems that the new owner wants to change things.

I have been using the pathway to the shore for over 30 years and I wonder what permission the owner has to deny access after all these years. It seems there are ulterior plans, because people who swim, fish and walk on the shores of Il-Munxar do not interfere with whatever the owner has in mind. The area is just being isolated.

I hope development is not on the new owner's mind. It would be a shame to ruin such a splendid area of national heritage. To whom should letters of complaint be addressed? Marsascala council should be concerned since Il-Munxar falls within its jurisdiction. Has the council looked into these complaints? Or are we just wasting time and ink and access will still be denied to us?
