Ian Micallef, president of the Association of Local Councils, has been named vice president of the European Union's Committee of the Regions (CoR), the Brussels-based assembly where representatives of local and regional government meet to have their say on EU legislative proposals.
During the plenary session of the CoR, the first of a new four-year term, Dr Micallef, a member of the European People's Party group, was also re-appointed head of the Maltese delegation to the committee.
Michel Delebarre, mayor of Dunkerque, France, was elected president of the consultative body.
The Maltese delegation to the CoR consists of five full and five alternate members. The other full members of the delegation, nominated by the government, are Claudette Abela Baldacchino, deputy mayor of Qrendi, Doris Borg, mayor of Birkirkara, Michael Cohen, mayor of Kalkara and Noel Formosa, mayor of San Lawrenz.
The CoR was established by the Maastricht Treaty in 1994 as a consultative body to provide representatives of local and regional government with a voice at the heart of the European Union.
The European Commission and the Council of Ministers are obliged to consult the CoR's 317 members on proposed EU laws across a wide range of policy areas, including employment, transport and the environment.
The assembly can also be consulted by the European Parliament.
