The memorial in Rabat to Maltese Hollywood actor Joseph Calleia was vandalised on Sunday night.

Someone knocked down the actor's bust from its base, damaging it beyond repair, a spokesman for the Rabat local council said.

The plinth and bust, which were made by Rabat sculptor Anton Agius, was inaugurated by the council last October.

Someone came across the damaged bust on the ground and carried it to the police station.

The monument is in Saqqajja Square, adjacent to the Bank of Valletta branch.

Silver screen star Calleia, who passed away 30 years ago, hailed from Rabat and went on to become one of Hollywood's most accomplished artistes.

The council strongly condemned the act and appealed to anyone having information leading to the perpetrator to contact the police.
