I would like to publicly express my full support for Astrid Vella, who has championed the conservation of what is left of the beautiful houses in Sliema. I am sure that all the people of Sliema as well as citizens of good will in Malta and Gozo admire the civic pride of this individual.

Whether of a baroque style or a 19th century house, such buildings should be protected by law. If we are going to continue losing the character of our village cores, what next?

I was a part-owner of a 19th century house in Sliema and I abided by the law: I sold it, not demolished it. Freedom of expression should never be interpreted as "hindering" a fair hearing of an application in front of the Malta Environment and Authority board but rather, people should admire any person who tries to defend architectural heritage and the environment.
