Human dignity must be respected 'from conception'

The common wealth of society is mankind and therefore people have the duty to try and ensure that human dignity is respected from conception till death, the Cana Movement and the Social Assistance Secretaiat of the Social Action Movement said in a message to mark Jum il-Hajja, Pro-Life Day, which falls on Sunday. Human dignity must also be respected in all aspects of life, including in the family, at work and in society.

However, life was becoming so fast that the noble value of life was being forgotten, they said.

Fr Louis Camilleri, Cana Movement director, and Gino Axisa, president of the Secretariat, said human dignity and the quality of life should be safeguarded within the family by continuing to treasure the values of prayer, life, respect, love, compassion, forgiveness, solidarity and justice; in the field of labour by working for unity and justice; and in society by working to strengthen the values of solidarity and justice.

They said that one expected Maltese MPs and MEPs to always legislate in a way that strengthened the values of the family, the foundation of society.

"In view of the scientific progress made, including progress in procreation, it has to be ensured that the interests and the good of mankind should come before the interests of society and of science," they said.

They also appealed to the media to work to strengthen the values of Maltese society, especially the value of human dignity.
