An Egyptian man, charged with conspiring to deal in over 14 kilogrammes of cannabis resin, yesterday took the witness stand in the compilation of evidence against a Maltese man charged with the same offence.

Egyptian national Ekramy Abdel Aziz Mobarak, 30, of St Paul's Bay took the witness stand, behind closed doors, in the compilation of evidence against Andrea Zammit, 54, of Rabat.

The two men had been arraigned together on December 23, 2005, and charged with conspiring to deal in 14.3 kilogrammes of cannabis resin, trafficking in the drug and its possession in circumstances denoting it was not for their personal use.

Following a separation of the two cases, the case against Mr Mobarak started being heard before Magistrate Miriam Hayman while the case against Mr Zammit is being heard before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera.

Police Inspector Dennis Theuma prosecuted.

Lawyer Emanuel Mallia appeared for Mr Zammit while lawyers Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busietta represented Mr Mobarak.
