An exhibition on Chinese opera figures has opened at the National Museum of Archaeology in Republic Street, Valletta.

The exhibition, being presented by Heritage Malta in collaboration with the China Cultural Centre, is made up of 60 figures, each one showing a different character from Chinese opera.

It is designed to give the Maltese public a good look into the colourful, striking world of Chinese opera, which has a unique style. Two Chinese experts will be coming over from China to give a demonstration and explain the style.

The exhibition is the fruit of collaboration between Heritage Malta and the China Cultural Centre. Following a visit to China by Heritage Malta chairman Mario Tabone, an agreement has been reached to hold another exhibition, that of a fine selection of terracotta soldiers from Xian, also at the Museum of Archaeology.

Tourism and Culture Francis Zammit Dimech inaugurated the opera exhibition. He said a total of 82,445 people visited this museum last year - an increase of nearly three per cent over 2004.
