By taking a cursory look at some of the programmes currently being screened on PBS one can begin to understand why the country is in such a sorry state where culture and values are concerned.

Of the several puerile programmes one takes the proverbial cookie - L-Ispjun, Malta's answer to Big Brother.

For the uninitiated this excuse for a programme consists of locking several persons of both sexes together in a house for a number of weeks and filming them going about their daily activities.

Chores may range from ironing to discussing lunch or supper and how they are going to cook it. The contestants are also filmed sleeping together in one room complete with snoring, no less! They waste their time arguing about everything under the sun, and philosophising about anything and everything. All in all an awe-inspiring programme which is I am sure is contributing a lot to educating the masses.
