It is highly regrettable that the president of the Nationalist Party, Victor Scerri, failed to realise what a can of worms he was opening by his letter suggesting that the Queen should have been asked to apologise to the Maltese Fascists and sympathisers of Mussolini's Italy.

At a time when the Prime Minister is gallantly facing up to our real problems, and needs all the support to carry out the reforms necessary for the country to survive, he is being foolishly let down by his deputy and the president of the party. They are going to be held responsible for the certain rout that is to follow.

This age-old polemic, about deportees, which was sure to split the country, was foreseeable and should never have been resurrected by anyone with a pinch of political acumen.

Speaking for myself, despite my admiration for the Prime Minister, I shall definitely not vote for a party which still harbours an obvious residue of Fascism, and obvious hate of those who saved us from the Nazi and Fascist jackboots.

In my opinion, these letters sealed the fate of the PN come the next election.

I cannot wait to vote against them at the first opportunity, that is at the Attard council elections.
