Dun Karm image proposed for euro

The Akkademja tal-Malti has proposed the image of the national poet Dun Karm for the euro.

The academy urged those who agree with the proposal to send a message via SMS on 5061 1000 saying L-Identità Maltija - Dun Karm.

Artist Luciano Micallef has proposed a design for the coin using the Dun Karm image.

The academy also urged the public to take part in a competition being organised by the National Euro Changeover Committee to chose the three designs that will be used on the national side of the euro coins.

The NECC has proposed four themes and has suggested three options for each. Among them are the temple altar, Fort St Angelo and the Mdina skyline. It also called for new proposals.

The academy said it felt that none of the NECC proposals represents Maltese culture.

It said there was no doubt that Dun Karm was the best known Maltese artist of all times, particularly because of his poems that are studied at school and for having written the Maltese national anthem among other works.
