To say that all the internees who were sent to Uganda were fascists is an insult to Maltese history.
Equally, the people who fought against the Axis were not all heroes; there are many stories of hoarding, black market and opportunists who had their heyday during the war.
After reading Rajt Malta Tinbidel and The Bonham Carter Diaries, I can perfectly understand what Minister Tonio Borg is saying.
One has to remember that during the war the first loser is truth, people are fed propaganda in the name of the "common good".
During the war if you were pro-Italian then you were automatically labelled a fascist and anti-British. Nerik Mizzi preferred Malta to be part of Italy (that is why he was silenced and thrown out of his homeland by the British). Herbert Ganado was not a fascist, he was a staunch Catholic and called a spade by its name.
Yes I think it is long overdue to have a formal apology at least to the innocent non-fascists who were interned during the war.
Keep it up, Dr Borg.
