City Gate and the Opera House ruins stand as a monument to the incompetence and procrastination of successive administrations. The suggestion that the Opera House site should be rebuilt to accommodate a new House of Representatives and that the taxpayer will have to foot the bill fills me with dread.

Why build a new block when Valletta is full of empty palaces crying out for rehabilitation?

I would like to put forward a simple and cost-effective solution - the Opera House site should be flattened and incorporated into Freedom Square. The enlarged pedestrianised square could be turned into one of the most elegant piazzas in the Mediterranean where one could stroll in peace, shop under the arches or sit at one of the many open-air cafés.

If there really is a need for a new House of Representatives, which I doubt, then look no further than the Fort St Elmo complex which I humbly offer as yet another of my simple solutions.
