The Qormi-Dingli individual time trial, the opening race on the Malta Cycling Federation calendar for 2006, took place yesterday after it was postponed the previous week due to inclement weather.
Again, conditions were not ideal with slight showers and wind gusts hampering the riders along the route. However, Jack Schiavone, a time trial specialist, still managed an exceptional time when he covered the 12-kilometre ascending course in 18 minutes and 22 seconds.
Schiavone is currently gearing up for the Commonwealth Games in March. Yesterday, he occupied the highest step on the podium ahead of Etienne Bonello who made it in 19:08.
The race was organised by the Qormi Wurth cycling club in conjunction with Dingli Local Council.
The next event in programme will be on Sunday in Zurrieq. The mass start race will be organised by Libertas CC.
