Cash register stolen in armed hold up

About Lm40 in cash were stolen in a hold up at Showtime Video shop, in Iklin, on Saturday night.

Two hooded men, one of them armed with a shotgun, rushed into the video shop at about 8 p.m. and made off with the cash register. A shop assistant and another person were inside the outlet at the time.

There has been a marked increase in armed hold ups over the past few months. Police investigations led to two men being charged last week with a string of hold ups, thefts and complicity in thefts.

A man who 14 years ago was charged with a hold up in which about Lm7,000 had been stolen was acquitted last week because the court felt that the prosecution's evidence was too weak to find the man guilty as charged.

The man was arraigned after his fingerprint was allegedly found on a document inside a stolen attaché case that had been spotted by a woman some time after the theft.
