Dr Lilian Azzopardi, senior lecturer at the Department of Pharmacy, was invited to contribute a chapter to the book Complete Guide to Medical Writing edited by Dr Mark Stuart, who had edited the well-known reference British National Formulary (BNF).

The book is published by the Pharmaceutical Press, UK, and is expected to be on the shelves later this year. Dr Azzopardi, who has been joined by Professor Anthony Serracino Inglott and Dr Maurice Zarb Adami as co-authors, will be contributing a chapter on "Writing Examination Papers and Assessment Documents".

Dr Azzopardi stated that in education, quality is an important aspect and assessment strategies together with curriculum development are used to ensure that the programme is accomplishing the intended purposes.

The contributed chapter gives an overview of issues of particular interest to medical education and related to developing and presenting assessment strategies. Issues discussed include principles and characteristics involved in the preparation of appraisal schemes and approaches and methods which could be adopted in preparing the relative documents.

Dr Azzopardi has presented several papers at international conferences and published extensively in the field of quality in pharmacy practice. The Department of Pharmacy is also planning to publish a Malta supplement to the BNF, which is the subject of a project carried out by pharmacy student Stephanie Micallef under Dr Azzopardi's supervision.
