The United World Colleges started in 1962 with the opening of the Atlantic College in South Wales. Today there are ten United World Colleges across the world, each with students from many different countries and cultures.

United World Colleges are the only global educational movement that brings together students from all over the world at a pre-university level, regardless of their ability to pay. Students are selected on merit and live together in an environment designed to foster international understanding, peace and justice.

High academic standards are balanced by opportunities for personal development through extensive community service, a wide range of cultural activities and rigorous outdoor pursuits.

This year, two Maltese students have the chance of being awarded a two-year scholarship to attend the United World College of the Adriatic in Italy or the United World College of the Pacific (Lester B. Pearson College, Canada).

The selected student is expected to participate fully in all aspects of the college programme - academic, services, college meetings, international/cultural affairs, and social occasions.

Participation and effort are fundamental criteria and students must face many new challenges and take the opportunity to participate in activities that they may not have tried before.

All students at the colleges prepare for the Diploma of the International Baccalaureate. The Baccalaureate is administered from Geneva and has an international panel of examiners. It is recognised for entry into the university of Malta, as well as the world's leading universities.

At the Adriatic College and Lester B. Pearson College, various subjects are offered as two-year courses. A normal individual programme consists of six subjects: three at higher and three at subsidiary level. Moreover, each student is required to follow a course in Theory of Knowledge. The teaching language for all subjects, with the exception of languages, is English.

More than 27,000 students have experienced a United World College education, since the inception of the first college in 1962. These graduates are evidence of the organisation's success. They carry forward a commitment to peace and understanding in an international context, developed while living and studying at a United World College.

Application forms for the scholarships 2006-2008 are available at the Customer Care Section of the Education Division, Floriana and at the Education Office, Victoria, Gozo. Completed application forms will be received at these offices until February 20.
