Pulp, a Young Enterprise company from the MCAST Institute of Art and Design, made an official presentation of its product, recycled paper, the primary source being printed paper from old Yellow Pages directories.
Two pallets that were held over from being exported were processed by Pulp to make textured paper.
During the presentation at the Institute of Art and Design, in Targa Gap, and to MCAST's board of governors and members of the press at MCAST Corradino, Stefania Mercieca, the company's managing director, explained the labour-intensive process involved in the production of the recycled paper which is currently available in A6 to A3 sizes.
The paper is bound in books that can serve various purposes; sketch books, journals, scrap books, visitors' books, photo albums, place-mats and greeting cards are but a few of the suggested uses.
The company's ethics and raison d'etre were explained during Pulp's presentation. Awareness and statistics were highlighted showing the amount of discarded paper on the island, the damage done to the environment because of untenable depletion of forests and the resultant global warming and climatic changes.
To ensure that the entire procedure was in line with expectations, Pulp invited HSBC's environmental officer Victor Friggieri to visit the production workshop and audit the process. Both Mr Friggieri and HSBC branch manager Tonio Cuschieri congratulated the Young Enterprise group for their initiative and gave the company a firm go-ahead.
Pulp is organising visits to schools to show students the fun they can get from creative work, by even using discarded material. In the process Pulp creates greater awareness about waste reduction.
