Three more works of art by Maltese artists have been installed along the new roads financed by the Fifth Italian Protocol.

They were put in place last week while the first one, by ceramist Gabriel Caruana, was installed a month ago at the Zebbug roundabout. A spokesman for the Roads Ministry said the installation of the fifth and last sculpture was delayed because of logistical problems.

The sculptures are being placed at traffic junctions along the new roads, which stretch from Luqa to Targa Gap.

Mario Galea's Fighting Spirit is in Zebbug. It represents a fencer performing a sudden movement that is meant to overwhelm an opponent, according to the artist.

Colonna Mediterranea, by Paul Vella Critien, has been installed in Luqa. The monumental sculpture is an abstract based on fantasy and the beauty of the Mediterranean colours.

The fourth sculpture, by Angelo Agius, was installed at the foot of Saqqajja Hill.

The fifth, by Charles Sammut, is a 9.5 metre-high piece composed of long pipes representing roadways leading people ahead. The pipes are connected together by circles and topped by a sphere after which they go along "the path of infinity".

Colonna Mediterranea, by Paul Vella Critien, has been installed in Luqa and Mario Galea's Fighting Spirit has been put up in Zebbug.
