December 7 marked an important event at Dun Karm Sant Primary School in Tarxien - the first cultural marathon walk, superbly organised by teachers and the school administration, was held at Buskett Gardens.
All pupils, from Kindergarten up to Year 6, participated along with a record 120 parents. The cloudy day did not mar the enthusiasm of pupils, teachers and parents, who were all eager to participate so actively in this event.
Fr René Vella, archpriest of Tarxien, celebrated Mass to start off the day.
The teachers previously prepared informative handouts for their respective classes. These were in the form of a booklet that directed the attention of the pupils to the environment, its care and upkeep and, most importantly, towards the love of nature in its true form.
It was a joy to watch Kindergarten pupils enthuse in a tree bark rubbing exercise and collect various leaf specimens.
The primary classes were involved, among other activities, in the spotting and listing down of any scattered litter left over by previous visitors. Unfortunately, their keen eyes did spot numerous items, like plastic bags and bottles, cigarette packets and others.
Many pupils exercised their observant powers to spot the different kinds of trees and leaves, their sizes and shapes. Birds were even spotted and a keen ear also manage to listen to different bird songs. Students of the upper classes could also observe insects through a magnifying glass.
The follow-up work at school will surely produce the imaginative drawing and writing abilities of the pupils to highlight this beautiful experience.
Head of school Vince Peresso thanked one and all for the work and effort carried out.
Special thanks also went to the parents and sponsors who contributed towards this fund-raising activity directed towards the upgrading and embellishment of the school library.
