A Birzebbuga man charged with setting fire to the front door of the Qormi mayor's home was yesterday granted bail.

Magistrate Miriam Hayman granted Kenneth Camilleri, 27, provisional liberty on condition he does not approach mayor Jesmond Aquilina or his family and does not go anywhere near Qormi.

The magistrate also bound him by a Lm1,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of Lm3,000. Mr Camilleri is pleading not guilty to setting the mayor's front door on fire, causing damage amounting to over Lm500 and threatening the mayor on January 3 at about 2 a.m.

Police Inspectors Carmelo Bartolo and Raymond D'Anastas prosecuted.

Lawyers Josè Herrera and Roberto Montalto were defence counsel.
