Paul Buttigieg, a 61-year-old bus owner from Zabbar, died after he was crushed between two of his buses in Zabbar Road, Fgura on Monday night.

The accident happened at about 11.30 p.m. after Mr Buttigieg and other members of his family went to Zabbar Road in a bus to see to another vehicle he also owned and which had stalled because of mechanical problems.

He parked the bus behind the faulty one and, together with the driver of the faulty bus, tried to see what the problem was. They decided that it could not be repaired on the spot. A pipe was passed to the faulty vehicle from the bus they had arrived in order to transfer some pressure which had been lost from the braking system of the bus causing it to lock.

But as soon as the faulty bus started gaining pressure, it somehow moved backwards crushing the owner against the other bus.

A first-aider who happened to be passing by gave initial assistance but the man was already in a critical condition. He was rushed to hospital where he died later in the night.

Duty Magistrate Abigail Lofaro appointed experts Yana Micallef Stafrace, Joseph Zammit and Richard Aquilina to help in an inquiry.

Police investigations are continuing.
