Maltese nouns

It was reported that the Maltese language body has coined the ewro (January 5).

Since when did Maltese nouns take an "o" ending? If we must have a Maltese identifier for the coin, then why not select a word which is compatible with our language? My two cents' worth, il-Lewra would be more appropriate (Lewri/Lewriet, in the plural).
