It was never planned to start work on Dock No. 1 in Cottonera before next year, the Ministry for Urban Development said in reply to the Opposition Leader's comment that the government had long spoken about this development but had done nothing about it.
The ministry said the selection process to determine which investors would be developing the dock project was underway.
In a reaction to Alfred Sant's charge that the government was ignoring Cottonera, the ministry said that over the past three years, Lm400,000 went into the extension of the quay at St Angelo and repairs on the quays at Senglea.
The government had also allocated Lm170,000 this year for the landscaping of the Vittoriosa promenade.
The ministry was confident that "several components" of other projects, including the Sea Gate Vaults and the construction of a car park in St Margaret Square, would come on stream in the coming months.
