Secondary school girls from Malta will have the opportunity to study the history and traditions of three other European countries through the EU's Comenius project.
The three-year project, titled Our Schools in Europe: History, Environment and Traditions, includes the participation of schools in Sicily, Hungary and Spain.
The head and representative from the Lily of the Valley Girls' Secondary School travelled to G. Martino, Tremestieri school in Messina recently to attend the first in a series of meetings under the coordination of the school's principal Giovanni Crisafulli.
The aims, outcomes and methodology of the project were discussed and the visiting members became acquainted with the different dynamics of each school.
The aim of the project is to enhance the national identity of students together with their international identity as European citizens. Students will study the environment, history and traditions of a selected area in their home country. This will be carried out through hands-on activities, the setting up of an exhibition and research works needed to carry out projects and to produce a video documentary.
At a later stage all the works of the four participating countries will be amalgamated through a joint documentary, together with an online site.
This is a unique opportunity for students to mix and to enrich their development, to understand the importance of their local identity and to realise they are a significant piece in a much larger jigsaw puzzle, the promoters say.
