May I remind Marisa Micallef (December 23) of the following point: Maltese and English are our official languages but, according to our Constitution, "The national language of Malta is the Maltese language".

I have nothing against the English language and against people who speak English. I myself write books in English. What I am against is people trying to speak in English or Maltese but instead creating another language which is a mixture of both. Does she not realise that in so doing we are destroying both languages at the same time? Of course, in English we use the word cappuccino but we do so also in Maltese. We also use the words fridge, computer and internet because Maltese is not a dead language. I do not know why the fact that I want to preserve Maltese words sounds "of the Mintoffian era". I did not even have a vote during that era (I was below 18 years of age) and I think that the love for all that belongs to our nation should sound nationalist, at least in ideology, rather than Mintoffian.

To conclude, I agree that English is our selling point in an increasingly growing world but if we choose to speak Maltese we should strive to speak it properly. This is unfortunately not the case especially from what I hear on television and radio stations.
