A 19-year-old man from Sliema was seriously injured after being shot yesterday while he was in a car in a Gzira street.

The police said the man, Ignatius Joseph Fenech, was shot at around noon while he was in a car with a 10-year-old boy and another person in Ponsonby Street, Gzira.

The victim, who personally reported the incident at the Sliema police station before being taken to St Luke's Hospital, was shot by a 30-year-old Birkirkara man, who was in another car, after a heated argument.

The police said the man was taken to hospital in a private car and was in a critical condition at one point. However, his condition later improved and became stable.

The man in the other car, who used to work at police headquarters but is not a policeman, was later arrested.

Duty Magistrate Giovanni Grixti is heading the investigation into the incident.
