Swimmers from three local clubs, Sliema, Neptunes and Sirens, are currently in Sicily for a five-day training camp in Bronte, province of Catania.
The training camp will also incorporate a one-day meet taking place today with the final prize being the 'Un Ponte sul Mediterraneo' trophy, designed specifically for this meet.
The Maltese swimmers will compete as one team against a representation made up of four Sicilian clubs.
The winners, based on points for specific events, will keep the trophy until the next meet.
The trip has been made possible after national swimming coach, Stefan Kormos, met his Bronte counterpart in San Marino, Professor Lucio Pricoco.
Coaches Gail Rizzo (Neptunes), Anita Mercieca Bons (Sliema) and Monique Mangion (Sirens) are accompanying the group. Mario Cachia, who co-ordinated the trip, also accompanied the team to Sicily as group leader during the first day.
The group was hosted by the Mayor of Bronte on Wednesday. The training camp is being referred to by the media in Bronte as a swimming twinning project that could become part of the calendar for the clubs involved.
