A Palestinian yesterday pleaded guilty to escaping from the detention centre at the police headquarters in Floriana.

Gerreda Murad, also known as Hadi Mohammed Alsnusii Alabyad, 37, born in Bethlehem, was accused of escaping from the police detention centre on May 25 last year. He was further charged with relapsing, having been convicted of other escapes in 2003.

Lawyer Vincent Galea, who appeared for the accused, said his client did not cause any damage in order to escape but merely found an open window and went on the run.

Police Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri, for the prosecution, said the police had found various broken items at the detention centre on the day of his escape. The defence, however, argued the accused had not been charged with such offences.
