Deputy Speaker at Nairobi conference

The Deputy Speaker, Carmelo Abela, MP is attending the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers, in Nairobi, Kenya.

The conference, which opened yesterday and continues until January 9, brings together Speakers and Presiding Officers of Commonwealth Parliaments to exchange information and express views on matters of common concern.

The aim of the conference is to maintain, foster and encourage impartiality and fairness on the part of Speakers and Presiding Officers and promote knowledge and understanding of parliamentary democracy in its various forms.

The topics to be debated include integrity and security of parliamentary precincts; the relationship between Parliament and the executive; and capacity building in Parliaments.
