Archbishop Joseph Mercieca yesterday stressed the need to redress the trend of families breaking up, and to strengthen the Maltese family.

Mgr Mercieca was receiving greetings from the public at the Archbishop's Palace in Valletta.

He said some sections of the media were undermining the family by promoting same-sex marriages.

"God's will was for a man and woman to marry and live together forever. We are all human and face temptation, but Christians should love and forgive," he said.

Mgr Mercieca hoped the new year would be "full of God's presence. A country can have all the wealth in the world but is nothing without God. It's God who unites people," he said, adding that there was a need for humility and prayer.
