Joseph Bonnici of Rhode Island, US (December 15) asked: Why are Malta's political parties scared of Maltese migrants? Scared indeed. It took Maltese migrants in Australia over 25 years to be given dual citizenship and another 11 years for their children to have the same rights.

Such laws still did not stop migrants being officially harassed with unnecessary bureaucracy when they return to Malta.

As to migrants being ever considered for voting rights, forget it. They will gladly give these rights to the Turks, the Greeks, the Poles, the Italians, the Germans etc before they consider our legitimate claims for voting rights as Maltese citizens living abroad.

Over the years these same migrants repatriated to Malta's economy billions of liri, thus having made life easier for those that stayed behind.
