The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) organised a half-day briefing seminar last week at Villa Bighi, Kalkara, in relation to the recently published calls for proposals under the "Science and Society" activity of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

The call for application involves areas in Science Education and Careers (FP6-2005-Science-and-Society-16) which covers school science teaching practice, boys' and girls' perceptions of science, performance indicators and priority setting, and Science Shops (FP6-2005-Science-and-Society-20).

The special guest speaker, Etienne Magnien, from the European Commission, gave a brief presentation on these calls, and presented some information on the prospects for Science in Society in FP7.

Mr Magnien is currently the Head of Unit of the Strategy and Policy Unit at the Directorate for Science and Society, Research DG. Future foreseen calls, like bringing Research closer to Society and Promoting Science and the Scientific Culture, were also covered during this seminar.
