Air Malta will next summer operate a flight every weekday from Reggio Calabria to Rome, calling it "another milestone for the airline which is exploiting the freedoms acquired as a result of Malta's European Union membership".

The flights will follow the successful operation of a programme of flights between Malta and Reggio last summer.

The new schedule was launched during a press conference held in the Reggio town hall and addressed by Giuseppe Scopelliti, the Mayor of Reggio and Dominic Attard, Air Malta's chief officer for strategic planning.

Mr Attard said Air Malta had been studying this route for months to ensure that the airline could make a success out of it.

Last April the airline successfully launched its first intra-European services between Catania and London Gatwick and is now planning to expand this operation, he said.

As with all other EU-registered airlines wishing to fly within EU countries, no special permits or concessions are required by Air Malta to operate this latest addition to its network.

The Reggio-Rome flights will operate daily between Monday and Friday departing Reggio for Rome Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) at 8.30 a.m. and from Rome to Reggio at 6.30 p.m.

Since the flights will be operated in conjunction with the current Air Malta schedule to Rome, the latter will be rescheduled to accommodate these flights.

Air Malta will retain the traditional direct flight (Monday to Friday) between Rome and Malta.

Dott Scopelliti said these flights will not only open up an important tourist and business link between Reggio and Malta but will strengthen the existing ties between two peoples that are located in the heart of the Mediterranean.
