Alex Spiteri (December 14) says that the violent thugs who attacked Muslims in Australia should not be called bigots and racists.

What does being a racist mean? A racist is a person who discriminates between people only on the basis of race and not merit.

Mr Spiteri himself states that "the assault by 5,000 white Australians on a group of Muslims at Sydney's Cronulla beach was in retaliation to the ongoing problem of Muslim gang attacks on white beach-goers and lifeguards".

So, by Mr Spiteri's logic, if I were a peaceful Muslim living in Australia, these thugs would be justified in beating me up, just because I would be a Muslim!

Now, since these violent thugs attacked innocent people who had nothing to do with any violence, and attacked them only because they are Muslims, it is correct to call them bigots and racists.

What's wrong with saying the truth?
