A Hamrun primary school teacher was assaulted by the mother of one of the students yesterday, the second such attack in under a week.
The Malta Union of Teachers was quick to condemn the attack, which happened at about 2.30 p.m. at Dun Gorg Preca School when the female teacher was leading the students out of the school.
As the students were about to leave the school, a parent grabbed the teacher by the neck and shook her, the union's vice president, Kevin Bonello, said yesterday.
The teacher managed to escape the woman's clutches and rushed to the headmaster's office. She later went to a doctor and reported the incident to the police.
The headmaster informed the union and the Education Department's operations director about the case. Mr Bonello said he informed the Director of Education about the case.
In the absence of the MUT president and general secretary, who are abroad, Mr Bonello contacted the teacher and offered the union's help and solidarity.
He will visit the school today to speak to the headmaster.
A school head was punched and kicked repeatedly by a young pupil's father who also attacked two other staff members before being reined in by a policeman at the Zabbar A primary school last Friday. A man has since been arraigned in connection with the incident. That was the third incident involving physical assault at schools within two weeks.
